On
some special occasion, the village fair is held. On the first of
Baihsakh, on the occasion of Muharram, during Durga Puja, on the day of
Rathjatra, fairs are held in different villages. A village fair
sometimes lasts even for fifteen days.
Shops
of various kinds are set up in a fair. All sorts of stationery and
fancy goods are brought in it. Rolled gold and imitation ornaments,
bangles, necklaces and earrings made of various materials are available
there Carpenters bring wooden almirahs, tables, chairs, bedsteads, etc.
Potters bring earthen pitchers and utensils; cloth merchants bring
shirts, frocks, etc. There is an exhibition of cottage industries.
Various
types of amusements are arranged in a fair. There are jatra, magic,
circus, merry-go-round (nagardola), etc. in it. Children, boys, and
girls enjoy all these very much. Local people and the people of the
neighbouring villages flock in the fair. They buy fancy goods and enjoy
the amusements. Sometimes cinemas are also shown in the fair.
A
village fair is of great use to the villagers. It provides for the
amusement of the village people. It is like an exhibition. Weavers,
artisans, blacksmiths, and carpenters earn money by selling their
products.
A
village fair has its demerits. There is a want of proper sanitation. As
a result, epidemics may outbreak. Gambling in the fair also causes ruin
to the simple village people. However, a village fair is a great
recreation for the villagers.
